JOHN VAN DRUTEN'S WRYLY COMIC OFFICE DRAMA FROM 1931 HIGHLIGHTS THE MALE/ FEMALE WORKING DYNAMIC IN A SOLICITORS OFFICE ON LONDON WALL. THE PLAY IS A FLY-ON-THE-WALL INSIGHT INTO THE STRUGGLES OF WOMEN IN A MALE DOMINATED WORKPLACE AT THE TIME. HOWEVER, DESPITE THE TIME AND SETTING OF THE PIECE, THE UPS AND DOWNS OF THE WORKPLACE DRUTEN CREATED FEEL FAMILIAR EVEN TODAY.

THE VOYAGE

CONCEPTUAL DIRECTION AND DESIGN BY CLEO ANDRIOLA

DESIGNED FOR THE NEW THEATRE, CARDIFF.

PHILIP GLASS WAS COMMISSIONED TO COMPOSE THE VOYAGE BY THE METROPOLITAN OPERA IN 1992 TO CELEBRATE THE 500TH COLUMBUS DAY. ONE OF GLASS' 'POTRAIT' OPERAS, THE PIECE DOESN'T CONTAIN A CONVENTIONAL NARRATIVE OF COLUMBUS BUT RATHER AN EMOTIONAL TRUTH OF SACRIFICE IN THE NAME OF DISCOVERY AND PROGRESS. THE PIECE HIGHLIGHTS THE TRIVIALITY OF EXISTENCE, AND THE IMMENSE ISOLATION AND FEAR LINKED TO THE SPIRIT OF EXPLORATION.

THE UNCHANGING WHITE VOID EMBODIED THE TERRIFYING CONTINUUM OF NOTHINGNESS FACED BY AN EXPLORER, BE THAT THE ATLANTIC OCEAN IN 1492 OR THE VAST EXPANSE OF SPACE NOW. THE AUDIENCE ARE THE ONES ON THE VOYAGE, HAPPENING UPON THESE INSTANCES IN TIME AND SPACE THAT GLASS HAS SELECTED. THE SCENES FADE IN AND OUT, CIVILISATIONS RISE AND FALL, BUT SOME THINGS STAND THE TEST OF TIME.

THE PILLOWMAN

CONCEPTUAL DIRECTION BY PAUL JENKINS

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN BY CLEO ANDRIOLA

DESIGNED FOR THE SELIGMAN STUDIO, CHAPTER ARTS CENTRE.

MARTIN MCDONAGH'S DARKLY COMIC HORROR IS SET IN AN UNSPECIFIED INTERROGATION ROOM. A WRITER IS BEING QUESTIONED ABOUT A SERIES OF CHILD MURDERS THAT BEAR RESEMBLANCE TO HIS SHORT STORIES.

REWORKED AS AN INTIMATE TRAVERSE PRODUCTION WITH THE AUDIENCE ACTING AS A JURY IN THE TRIAL OF KATURIAN. THE FANTASY AND HORROR CREEPS IN WITH SHADOWS AND SOUNDS BEYOND THE PRISON DOORS AND TWO-WAY MIRROR, BEING ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T SEE AS MUCH AS WHAT YOU DO SEE.
